The information office of Jilin province’s government held a news conference on March 19, which outlined exciting plans for a more innovative and international future for Changchun, capital city of the northeastern province, according to local officials.

They said that Wang Lu, executive vice mayor of Changchun gave a briefing on the city’s high-quality development plans in four sectors.

The official said the city will build an international automobile city, a national regional innovation center, an international film city and a China-South Korea (Changchun) international cooperation demonstration zone.

According to the plans, the new Changchun international automobile city will be based on major Chinese auto manufacturer the FAW Group, which is a leading corporate resident in the city. It will focus on building a world-class auto and auto parts research and development, production and aftermarket service base, as well as an automobile industry development demonstration zone.

The automobile city will cover 471 square kilometers and by the end of 2025, it is expected to achieve total annual output value of over 800 billion yuan ($112.58 billion).

The Changchun national regional innovation center will mainly cover three areas -- the high-tech zone, the economic development zone and the Beihu zone -- covering an area totaling 724 sq km.

Meanwhile, the high-tech zone and the economic development zone will focus on the development of medicine, IT and auto parts industries. By the end of 2025, the industries are expected to achieve output value of more than 500 billion yuan respectively in both zones.

The Beihu zone will focus on development of IT, aerospace and the biomedicine sectors, which are expected to achieve output value of over 200 billion yuan by the end of 2025.

The international film city aims to give full play to Changchun Film Studio as the cradle of China’s film industry -- and will build an international film industry chain base. Covering an area of 1,051 sq km, the base will focus on development of film culture and tourism, life health and the digital industries. By the end of 2025, the main business revenue is expected to exceed 200 billion yuan.

Changchun city also plans a China-South Korea international cooperation demonstration zone, with an area of 512 sq km. It will focus on development of high-end equipment and intelligent manufacturing, medicine and the health food sectors. It is expected to have preliminarily developed into a high-quality international cooperation platform by the end of 2025.

Officials said that the plans aim collectively to boost revitalization in Northeast China. They aim to promote industrial diversification and upgrading, boost growth in the services sector in Changchun, as well as accelerate the city’s opening-up and international cooperation.
